What are expression lines?
Expression lines, also known as dynamic wrinkles, appear over time on the face, neck, and chest.
They gradually form in areas that are constantly engaged in our daily facial expressions—smiling, frowning, laughing, or talking.
These wrinkles are directly linked to the repeated contractions of facial muscles, which occur hundreds of times a day.
When we are young, the skin tolerates these movements well due to its natural richness in hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin.
These elements are essential for maintaining firm, supple, and smooth skin.
But as we age, their levels decrease. The skin becomes less hydrated, less elastic, and begins to sag, which deepens the folds left by our expressions.
What are the different types of expression lines?
Crow’s feet
Located at the outer corners of the eyes and extending toward the temples, crow’s feet are expression lines caused by repetitive eye movements, such as smiling or squinting.
They are among the first wrinkles to appear and can give the eyes a tired look.
Frown lines (glabellar lines)
This vertical wrinkle between the eyebrows often gives the face a stern or tense look, even when relaxed or in a good mood.
It is caused by frequent frowning.
Nasolabial folds
Also called smile lines, these creases run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth.
Often deep, they contribute to an aged appearance, especially as the skin in this area loses firmness.
Marionette lines
These wrinkles extend from the corners of the lower lips down toward the chin.
When pronounced, they give the face a sad or closed-off expression, hence their name.
Lip lines
Sometimes called smoker’s lines or barcode lines, these fine wrinkles appear above the upper lip and occasionally below the lower lip.
Since the skin around the mouth is very thin, this area is particularly vulnerable to aging.
Forehead lines
These horizontal wrinkles are caused by repeated movement of the eyes and eyebrows, such as frowning or raising the brows.
They often appear early and tend to deepen with age, quickly marking the upper part of the face.
Eyelid wrinkles
The skin on the eyelids is extremely thin and mobile, making it very sensitive to aging.
Over time, it sags and creases, leading to wrinkles that can dull the gaze and give a tired appearance.
These wrinkles usually appear later than others, but their aesthetic impact is significant.
How to reduce expression lines?
There are several ways to prevent and diminish expression lines.
Simple habits, such as applying anti-wrinkle creams or practicing facial exercises, can help delay their appearance and gradually soften them over time.
Adopt a skincare routine suited to your skin type—serums, oils, moisturizers, masks... These treatments nourish the skin and stimulate natural collagen production.
A weekly facial massage, performed after warming a few drops of oil between your hands, is an excellent way to boost skin elasticity.
However, despite these good habits, wrinkles tend to deepen with age. When skincare alone is no longer enough, targeted aesthetic solutions like Botox or hyaluronic acid can help:
- Botox injections work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles responsible for wrinkles. The result: smoother, firmer, and visibly rejuvenated skin.
- Hyaluronic acid injections provide immediate filling effects, ideal for softening deep-set wrinkles and restoring volume to specific areas of the face.
