Common Orthodontic Problems: When to Seek Medical Attention?

At Dr. David Benguira, we understand the importance of intervening quickly when faced with orthodontic problems to ensure effective correction and avoid more serious complications in the future. Some orthodontic problems, if not treated early, may require more complex interventions in adulthood, including surgery. Here is an overview of the most common orthodontic problems for which it is urgent to consult.

Common Problems

Jaw too narrow
A jaw that is too narrow can lead to bone asymmetry if not treated early. Without intervention, orthodontics alone will not be able to resolve this anomaly, and surgery may be necessary in late adolescence. Early treatment promotes better nasal breathing and proper growth of the upper jaw.

Prognathism of the upper jaw and/or retrognathism of the lower jaw
When the upper jaw is too far forward in relation to the lower jaw, the risk of fracture of the upper incisors increases if not treated early. Correcting this imbalance early can prevent more serious complications.

Retrognathia of the upper jaw
If the lower jaw is in front of the upper jaw, and early treatment is not initiated, orthodontics alone will not be able to correct this anomaly. In most cases, maxillofacial surgery will be necessary in adolescence or adulthood.

Open bite (lack of contact between the upper and lower teeth)
Open bite can be caused by thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or childhood swallowing that pushes the tongue against the teeth. This problem may require a combination of orthodontic treatment and speech therapy to retrain the tongue.

Lack of space and malpositions
A lack of space can make brushing difficult, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. This problem is both aesthetic and functional, requiring special attention.

Excess space
Excess space between teeth can also cause aesthetic and functional problems, requiring appropriate orthodontic correction.

Severe overbite
A severe overbite, where the upper teeth completely cover the lower teeth, can promote tooth wear and increase the risk of trauma to the gums. Orthodontic treatment is essential to prevent these complications.

Canine included
When the permanent canine tooth becomes stuck in the jaw, a combination of orthodontic treatment and surgery is often necessary to allow the canine tooth to erupt.

Spaces between upper incisors greater than 3mm
Excessive space between the incisors can prevent the canines from erupting, requiring surgery to correct this problem.

Permanent molar stuck under a baby molar
A blocked permanent molar can lead to a risk of caries and premature loss of the baby tooth, which compromises the space needed for the eruption of the permanent tooth.

Dental agenesis
Congenital absence of a tooth (agenesis) requires a decision whether to extract the baby tooth or keep it in the arch, depending on the occlusion and skeletal pattern.

Presence of a supernumerary tooth
The presence of a supernumerary tooth can block the normal eruption of other teeth. Its extraction is often necessary to allow normal dental development.

Premature loss of baby teeth
Early management of premature loss of baby teeth can prevent impaction of adult teeth and prevent the development of jaw asymmetries.

Ankylosed baby teeth
When baby teeth are ankylosed, a space maintainer may be needed to ensure that permanent teeth have enough room to erupt properly.
