What is bruxism and where does it come from?

Bruxism is a condition characterized by involuntary and repetitive contractions of the jaw muscles, leading to clenching or grinding of the teeth. It occurs mainly during sleep and can have significant consequences on oral health as well as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Possible consequences of bruxism

Bruxism can lead to a range of complications:
Fatigue due to disrupted sleep
Premature wear of tooth enamel
Pain during chewing,
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders,
Neck tension,
Tooth loosening.
TMJ disorders can progress chronically and may involve:

Popping or cracking sounds during jaw movements
Limited ability to open the mouth
Changes in the shape of the lower face
Tinnitus or hearing problems

How does Botox work on bruxism?

Neuromodulator injections (such as Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®) offer an innovative therapeutic solution for individuals with bruxism, especially when an occlusal splint is not well tolerated.
Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the involved muscles. It works by reducing their ability to contract excessively, which allows for:

A reduction in muscle tension
A reduction or even elimination of symptoms
Relief from TMJ-related pain
A reduction in muscle hypertrophy, improving the balance of the lower face

Injections of neuromodulator into the masseter muscles may be recommended to:
• Reduce the contractions responsible for bruxism, sometimes as an alternative to an occlusal splint
• Slim a jaw that has become enlarged due to muscle hypertrophy
• Relieve TMJ pain caused by excessive muscle tension.
• This treatment is generally very well tolerated, but it is contraindicated for individuals who are allergic to egg whites or have neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis.
