Does your child show these signs?

Mouth breathing in children

Breathing problems: Mouth breathing (open mouth), snoring, difficulty concentrating at school.

Dental problems: Crooked teeth, permanent teeth that won’t come in, prolonged thumb sucking (after age 5), premature loss of baby teeth.

Jaw problems: Jaw too narrow, crossbite, recessed or protruding chin.

If you recognize one or more of these signs, a free orthodontic evaluation will determine whether early treatment is beneficial.

The Solution: Interceptive Orthodontics from Age 7

Palatal expansion appliance

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation at age 7. This is the ideal age to use natural growth as an ally.

Why treat early?

  • Uses natural growth as an ally
  • Avoids future extractions
  • Reduces the duration of Phase 2 treatment
  • Often costs less overall
  • Better self-esteem during childhood

Types of treatment for children

Palatal expander, functional appliance, space maintainer, Phase 1 partial braces — each plan is customized to your child’s needs.

Frequently Asked Questions — Children’s Orthodontics

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation at age 7. At this age, the first permanent teeth have erupted and we can detect jaw growth problems.

Do braces hurt children?

Discomfort is minimal with modern techniques. Children may feel slight pressure for 2-3 days after adjustments, easily managed with Tylenol.

My child is very afraid of the dentist. How do you handle that?

That is our specialty. Dr Benguira spent 15 years at Sainte-Justine Hospital treating children with anxiety, ADHD, autism, and phobias. We move at the child’s pace and never force anything.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost for a child?

Every case is unique. Costs are evaluated on-site based on your child’s specific needs during the free consultation. We offer interest-free financing.

My child breathes through their mouth. Is that related to orthodontics?

Yes, often. Mouth breathing is frequently caused by an upper jaw that is too narrow. Palatal expansion treatment can open the nasal passages and enable normal breathing.

Do all children need braces?

No. About 30% of the children we evaluate do not need immediate treatment. If your child does not need treatment, we will tell you honestly.

What is the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2?

Phase 1 (ages 7-11): interceptive treatment to correct growth problems, lasting 6-18 months. Phase 2 (ages 12+): full treatment to align all permanent teeth, lasting 18-24 months.
